NYSC Boss Inaugurates Water Project At Enugu Orientation Camp
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure on Saturday inaugurated a water project at the orientation camp in Awgu, Enugu State.
Speaking at the event, Kazaure said that he was elated that the corps had overcome the intractable potable water challenges in the camp.
“We have tried severally to provide potable water in this camp and I am elated that we have finally succeeded.
“In spite of the challenges we encountered, the water is now running and we are proud of the state coordinator for achieving this,” he said.
The DG however, expressed dissatisfaction at the state of infrastructure at the orientation camp.
Kazaure, who addressed newsmen during a working visit at the camp appealed to the Enugu State Government to upgrade the facilities to meet the minimum standards.
He said that it was the duty of the state government to renovate facilities at the site, which he said were dilapidated.
He also said that the camp needed a befitting pavilion to serve as a lecture hall for the corps members.
“It is the duty of the state government to provide and maintain infrastructure at the NYSC orientation camps. We only manage the corps members in the camp,” he said.
The director- general said that having gone round to inspect the state of facilities at the camp, the infrastructure in the camp needed total renovation.
“The structures are dilapidated and we can only appeal to the state government so that they will be alive to their responsibilities,” he said.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Ikaka thanked the director general for assisting them in the construction of the borehole.
Ikaka said that five different contracts had been awarded for the provision of potable water in the camp but none was executed.
He appealed to Kazaure to attend to some of the areas of concern in the camp which included perimeter fencing, hostels, provision of funds for diesel, utility vehicle and other areas of intervention.
The coordinator said that the camp needed a big pavilion to serve as lecture hall for corps members.
He said that the access road to the camp was in deplorable condition and needed to be rehabilitated.
“We depend on our 100KV generator for our power needs but the state government has promised to provide electric transformer with a view to connecting the camp to the national grid,” he said.
Ikaka said that the corps members were in high spirit rearing to serve their fatherland.
The NYSC orientation camp in Awgu is one of the foremost camps in the country established in 1973.
